(Icons/Graphics) givingtree.jpgOne of my favorite books to share with my students and my own children during the holidays is The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. The Giving Tree is a tale about a relationship between a young boy and a tree. The tree always provides the boy with what he wants: branches on which to swing, shade in which to sit, apples to eat, branches with which to build a home. As the boy grows older he requires more and more of the tree. The tree loves the boy very much and gives him anything he asks for. In the ultimate act of self-sacrifice, the tree lets the boy cut her down so the boy can build a boat in which he can sail. The boy leaves the tree, now a stump. Many years later, the boy, now an old man, returns and the tree says, "I have nothing left to give you." The boy replies, "I do not need much now, just a quiet place to sit and rest." The tree then says, "Good! A tree stump is a great place to do just that! Come boy, sit down and be happy." The boy obliged and the tree was happy.  Some people have questioned rather this book is about self sacrifice, selfishness, or selflessness.  Regardless of the interpretation, the book has a message that I personally feel is important for children to hear, discuss and understand...developing their OWN interpretations of the relationship between the boy and the tree.

During the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons, it seems we do collections for the needy because this is the time we are made AWARE of the fact that there are so many doing with less that we have.  It's a great time to broach the topic of giving back with your family, making your children aware that many families and children do without all year long, and making a difference in their community all year long is just as important in May as it is in November.  Click here for several local charities and ways in which you and your family can make a difference here at home.

  Teen SAFETY

It seems as parents we worry most about talking to our kids about alcohol and drug use/abuse, sex, and internet safety, but sometimes we forget the very important topic of SAFE DRIVING!  With the ever growing number of children using cell phones and the popularity of text messaging, driving has become even more dangerous than (BUILT IN) (Icons/Graphics) Teens_Phone_Computer.jpgbefore.  Adreinne Parker wrote an article on this topic in last week's Review Journal.  She highlighted a new website called www.platester.com.  The website sends a bumper sticker (about $5) with the words "How's my driving?" and a telephone number.  Platester.com will text message parents to report any infractions that are reported to them. Truck companies using a similar system reported a 20% decrease in accidents.  After watching a very graphic youtube video put out by a Canadian insurance company about teens texting and driving, I found this to be an interesting and useful resource for parents.

Help the Review Journal solve the mysteries of Santa for your chance to appear in a video on the R-J web site!

Have your child answer the questions and Mom or Dad should send the answers by e-mail, snail mail or fax  by November 25 to: Santa Quiz, Las Vegas Review Journal, P.O. Box 70, LV, NV 89125-0070 or FAX to 383-4676 or EMAIL to jprzybys@reviewjournal.com with "Santa Quiz" in subject line.  Have Fun!

1. We're told Santa goes all over the world on Christmas Eve. How does he do that?

2. We've always heard Santa comes down through the chimney. But we don't have a chimney, much less a fireplace. So what does he do instead to bring us our presents?

3. While we admire his read suit, it seems a little heavy for Southern NV, even during the winter. Why does he wear a red suit anyway?

4. We were always told that Santa likes milk and cookies when he visits. Are there any other treats he likes?

5. We understand they naughty and nice thing. But how does he really know who's naughty and nice?

6. We know where Willie Wonka found the Oompa Loompas. But where did Santa find his elves?

7. We know Santa is busy this time of year. But what does he do the rest of the year? Does he go on vacation? Where would he go? Does he have a hobby? Favorite TV show?

8. And, maybe there are questions we don't have that you do. If you had a chance to ask Santa a question, what would it be?
